Nirupama Rao took over as India Foreign Secretary. She is 1973-batch Indian Foreign Services officer.
She succeeded Shiv Shankar Menon.
Ms. Rao is a Fellow of the Centre for International Affairs (now the Weatherhead Centre) of Harvard University from 1992-93. 
Chokila Iyer was the first woman to serve as India's foreign secretary in 2001.
